Acetone is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with a strong and distinctive odor. It is also known as propanone, and by its IUPAC name, propan-2-one. It is the smallest and simplest ketone.
Acetone is produced in animals through normal metabolic processes. It becomes more prominent in cases of diabetes and reduced carbohydrate availability.

Name origins

Literally "derivative of acetic acid", from Latin acetum "vinegar" and Greek suffix -one, "daughter."
